Robert Horvick, Senior Engineer
What is your area of expertise? We all know you as "the data guy," which of course is a compliment around here. Is data analytics your favorite thing or is there another area of expertise you can share with us?
I’ve been doing this (software development) for about 15 years and during that time I’ve had my hands in a lot of projects.
Since joining 3 Birds, I’ve been able to take my interest in data and combine it with my development experience to create a role that is the best of both worlds. Whether I’m working on a dashboard, crunching numbers on the backend, or adding new features, it all centers around data.
What are your hobbies outside of work?
I play guitar and sing for my own enjoyment and at various open mics around the Triangle. Every once in a while I am fortunate to be welcomed to perform with a local group of musicians (“The Regulars”) who have raised tens of thousands of dollars for local charities in the last few years. If you live in the Raleigh/Durham area you should come!
I also homebrew various beverages (root beer and an American pale ale are on tap now), enjoy trail running (though not as often as I should) and my inner child still gets a thrill out of opening a pack of baseball cards once in a while.
Where are you from originally?
I was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota and moved to rural northern Minnesota (Detroit Lakes) during high school where I met my soon-to-be wife, Susan. After 12 years in the Fargo area, we and our four children moved to Raleigh in 2005.
How long have you lived in Chapel Hill? What are your favorite spots in the area?
We’ve been in the Triangle area since 2005. We live about 45 minutes from Chapel Hill which affords me the opportunity to get through a lot of audio books and podcasts with a little time left over for absolute silence (something you don’t get a lot of with 4 kids!).
There are so many great spots in the Triangle it will be hard to pick just a few. On any given night you might find us watching the Durham Bulls at the DBAP, going to downtown Raleigh for dinner at Capital Club 16, catching a show at Cat’s Cradle or The Lincoln [Theater] or just hanging out with friends watching a local band or playing music on a patio somewhere. And anywhere that serves good sushi.
When we want to be outside (during those wonderful days when the temp stays below 90), I love hiking at Harris Lake, walking the trails at Yates Mill or just getting out on the Tobacco Trail.
Robert's contributions at 3 Birds are felt every day. He’s excited about what the future holds when it comes to offering even more possibilities to our customers—a future that’s growing closer every day.
